Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration and Service
Calling for Volunteers!
The City of Surprise invites you to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy at our 9th Annual MLK Day of Celebration & Service from 8 a.m. to noon on January 18th at Willow Canyon High School. This year’s theme, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve,” encourages volunteers of all ages to join us in meaningful acts of service that benefit our community.
The program will feature a welcome by Mayor Kevin Sartor with Susan Casper, Community Relations Manager and Anchor for Arizona’s Family, returning as emcee. Pastor Jason Flowers of Transformation Community Church will deliver an invocation. Attendees will enjoy powerful performances by the Willow Canyon High School Choir, Surprise Sings Community Choir, Voices of Gideon, vocalist Lauren Frazier, the inspiring Pilgrim Rest Voices of Praise, and a special presentation by The Be Kind People Project. Additionally, we will showcase a video highlighting community responses to the #SurpriseCelebratesMLK challenge and a poem presented by Olivia Hansen, West Valley Youth Poet Laureate, and Maggie Gautier, WHAM Art Center Literary Arts Manager.
Following the program, volunteers will engage in hands-on service projects that directly benefit our local community. These include packing food for Valley View Food Bank, assembling school supplies and hygiene kits, and writing letters of encouragement.
